To Brooklyn with Love

Traveling

16 Oct

Emily told me once that the only reason she hangs out with me is so she’ll be in my blog. Em, I promise not to let you down.

Last weekend I went to visit her in Brooklyn. I love Emily and I love New York, so it’s perfect.  The New York tourist inside of me was satisfied at 14, so now I have all the time in the world to find the really cool things in the city beyond the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center.  I got to see Billy and have a mini-reunion with Rebecca at a sweet cupcake restaurant near NYU.  Plus–we visited Eataly, Smorgasburg (and got some Japanese-inspired tacos!), and the Union Square market.  I’ve been looking for some fabric to make a pillow and found the perfect Indonesian material at a flea market in Brooklyn.  Sometimes it’s not where you get it that matters, but the story behind it.

But the whole time, I found myself comparing New York to Washington as we walked through the city, which made me realize all the good things each has to offer.

pros of new york:

– fixed price subway rides (& unlimited passes)

– art in the subways

– delicious food

– taxis that take credit cards and don’t get you lost all the time

– really cool hipster flea markets (like Smorgsaburg!)

– beautiful skyline

– BAGELS

pros of washington:

– clean metro system

– my wardrobe isn’t out of place or too conservative

– eastern market

– professional food truckers

it felt so good to pull into the familiarity of union station, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t already started thinking about the next place I’ll head off to 😉

a bientot, new york.
