My Kind of Town

Washington

11 Sep

Yesterday was a foggy day in Washington. But the gloominess of the forecast was made a bit brighter by a day off work, the birth of my newest tiniest little friend Calder, and another item checked off my bucket list. Pursuant with my bucket list, I climbed (ok elevator-ed) to the top of the Washington Monument. When I moved to Washington in 2012, it was still closed from the earthquake that struck in 2011 and didn’t reopen again until this spring, which didn’t give me a ton of time to cross it off my list!

While the monument was closed, I did manage to go up to the top of the Old Post Office (RIP since its sale to Donald Trump), but the views from the clock tower truly pale in comparison. From the top of the monument, I felt like Charlie in Willy Wonka shouting, “Grandpa I can see our house from here!” from a glass elevator. So in lieu of my usual ramblings, here is my view of Washington, from what used to be the tallest building in the world–and still is the largest freestanding stone structure (I am a nerd for useless trivia).

I love those pictures as well as the titles. You do a terrific job with the pictures, with the inclusion of the titles and the written word. If you get a chance, how’s about writing a loving note, full of thanks and praise, to your grandfather (GD). It would mean a lot to him.

I love you dearly and wish you a great trip – also wishing you a great success in your new job.

When I read what you’ve written and see your pictures, I am incredibly proud of you! I’m right proud of you any way – I think you’re very creative and I love the way you think.

I love you, my darling. Enjoy your time abroad and don’t miss an opportunity to explore the wonderful historical spots. And don’t forget to label your pictures. You may think you’ll remember which church had the most glorious rose window but you won’t.

I have more words of wisdom to lay on you but I’ll save them for another time. What is your departure schedule? Will you be coming here for Christmas?

    I love you,
    Classy

When I would walk home from work in the summer I used to pass this bar and dreamt today it was still open and still loud, with people spilling onto the sidewalk. I miss you, New York. ❤️
